ABOUT WICKFORD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL........

In the 1800's this school was called the Washington Academy. Wickford Elementary School is the oldest public school in New England. In 1905 it was destroyed by fire. The hill that Wickford Elementary is built on used to be an island. It was surrounded by water on all sides. In the 1800's, the land was backfilled around the town to create what is now Phillips and Brown Street. It wasn't as easy getting to school as it is today. In the 1800's, our school was once used as a Navigational School. Families from as far away as New York would send their sons here to learn the shipping trade and navigation businesses. The End ...
