THE LEGEND OF THE BLUEBONNET

The Legend of the Bluebonnet, retold and illustrated by Tomie DePaola, is an old Texan tale about love and sacrifice. Here are some comments by fourth grade students from Wickford Elementary School in North Kingstown, Rhode Island:

The girl in the story had alot of courage to throw her only thing left from her parents into the fire for her people.

I think the girl was very brave to give up the only thing that reminded her of her parents.

I think the girl was smart to ask the gods for her land back.

I think she was brave to give up her doll and put it into the fire.

I think the girl was very brave and kind to sacrifice her doll for the sake of the other people when that was the only thing she had left from her family that died.

I think this story is about courage and sacrifice and not thinking of only yourself.

I liked this story because I thought it was nice of the girl to give up the doll that she loved for her people in the village.

She must have had alot of courage to give up her doll for the people in the village. I would have done that.

I thought this was a very good book. I liked the part when the little girl gave up her doll and then all the bluebonnets appeared the next morning.

I thought this was a very good book because you usually don't give up the things you love.

I thought this book was neat. I liked how the girl in it crept out at night to sacrifice her doll. I also liked when they show you a picture of all the bluebonnets on the hills. It was a smart idea to sacrifice something you love to make rain and to tell the sun you are sorry for whatever you did.
