SEPARATION, INITIATION, RETURN

This song was written by the children at Gilbert Stuart Elementary School in response to their enjoyment of the story STORM BOY by Paul Owen Lewis. The story is about a boy who is thrown from his canoe into the icy waters of the rugged Northwest Coast. He then embarks on a mysterious adventure. Here are the lyrics inspired by events and vocabulary from the story. Each of the thirty students in this class contributed a line.

Storm Boy
is about me
because one day I was lost.
When I got lost
because I like berries
My mother, she got worried.
When I go Somewhere
without my family
I get scared and worried.
Once I got lost
from my brother
I'll never leave home again.
I went to Puerto Rico
with my Aunt
I missed my family.
I lived in Guatemala
but I will go back one day to visit.
I was in a canoe
and I fell off
I couldn't breathe underwater.
When I fell
from the boat
I did not feel lost.
Do it like this
Do it like that.
People in a hurry
and I felt lost.
Then I learned
in the D.R.
that life is not the same.
It is hot
with many flowers
and not very much rain.
I like to dance
I like to sing
my family taught me how.
I can read.
I can dance.
I can show you how.
And Once I knew
a kid who fished
and I really do like fish.
But I won't eat
any fish
that is uncooked.
When I got lost
I got scared
but once I was back
it was fun.
When I go back
to the D.R.
I'll show Grandma what to do.
My Grandma sings
me lovely songs
I love her for what she does.
I was scared
then I was safe
my grandmother by my side.
I saw my mother heading straight for me
I was lost
then found.
Now I show my family
what I did
how I danced
and what I ate.
I like fish
and I like masks
just like in the book.
Now I am in my house
I am the princess
I am the only girl.
I like my family,
my family likes me
And my Mom
hugs me tight
and gives me
a
great
big
kiss.
