American Goldfinch
The American goldfinch is five inches long and has a bright song. In
summer, the breeding male is yellow with black wings with white bars and a
black forehead. The females are a dull olive yellow with blackish wings
with white bars. In winter, both males and females are the duller color of
the female.
Their habitat is weedy grasslands, thickets, roadsides, and near
water in willow trees, and in winter, in feeders. Their nests are of
grasses and thistledown. They can live in holes of trees. They have four
or five pale-bluish eggs. They eat mostly seeds including sunflowers.
Goldfinches range from southern Canada to southern U. S. and N.
Baja California. They winter in the U. S.
