Curriculum Connections
English
As a creative writing project students will write an advertisement for
their ride, which emphasizes the physical sensations the ride would give.
Students should consider the medium they'll be using for their advertisement.
Students will write up a proposal for the school's parent association to
fund the trip that the class voted the most appealing to the class, their
parents and teachers.
Art
Students will do their preconstruction renderings of the ride they
intend to build in art class. They will consult with both art and science
teachers to determine materials to use in building their ride. Art class
will focus on consideration of elements of design, display and function.
Students will photograph projects ,have photos digitally developed and use
those pictures for the multimedia component of the project.
Social Studies
Students will research amusement park links to find historical data
on amusement parks. As a segment of the Time Magazine /20th Century
project students will prepare an article on an amusement park
of note from the decade they are studying for the Time Project.
Mathematics
Students will price the materials they need to construct their models, investigate
to determine the most economically feasible designs and materials, and will
survey the amount each team spends to price out the cost of the entire
project. Students will invent an incentive to reward the most economically
prudent project.
Students will select a particular favorite ride then will use the internet
to gather data on which amusement parks offer that ride, which have the
biggest, fastest and highest, and which they would be most like to visit, creating
graphs and /or spread sheets to compare and contrast data.
Based on the above research students will plan a trip to the amusement
park of their choice. Plans should include pricing out and selecting travel
modes, hotel accommodation , food costs and park admission fees.
Students will plan and implement a fund raiser to help pay for the class
trip to the amusement park.
