WELCOME TO
Project Overview:
This Project SMART 96
project is an attempt
to create a technology component to an inquiry-type, kit-based science activity
initiative commonly referred to as Kits In Teaching Elemetary Science
(K.I.T.E.S.) The specific kit activity addressed in this project is entitled "Microworlds,"
which is geared to grade 5, but can be modified to fit in grade 6. It is
intended to be a teacher resource, providing not only background information and
activities for students, but also to promote collaboration with other teachers
with similar responsibilities. This is intended to be one of many such "tech
connections" to the East Bay Educational Collaborative's kit selection and
development. This project will become a component to the guidance and support
provided by Jeffrey Soares, Microworlds kit specialist.
Hands On Bridge Building
Project Overview:
The integration of math and science requires innovative techniques to encourage students to learn. This activity will allow the students to browse and search for information required to complete their project. The bridge will be designed and built by the students out of inexpensive materials such as spaghetti, tape and glue. Other materials, such as straws or popsicle sticks, may be substituted as the situation or budget dictates. It will require the students to do a cost analysis of their project and to conceptualize how their completed project will look before having built it. The spaghetti bridge can be a fun and challenging activity.
"Taz's World"!
Project Overview:
"Taz's World" is an 8th grade interdisciplinary unit designed as
the culminating project for our classes. Actual implementation of this unit will occur near
the end of the academic year. Groups of students are required to use information obtained in
all academic classes over the course of the current school year as well as information
obtained from the Internet and Library in order to create their ideal planet.
Some courses involved in this project include
Astronomy, Civics, Designing a Government, Ecology, English, Folklore and Storytelling, General Science, Human Physiological Needs, Library,
Measurements and Graphing, and Research and Internet Skills.
It's ELEMENTary!
Project Overview:
THE ATOMIC AGE
Project Overview:
Students will study the technological and social events leading to the development of the atomic bomb, the impact of the bomb, and the ushering in of the Nuclear Age.
Amusement Park Physics
Project Overview: The students will plan and
build a model amusement park ride using the internet for research and collaboration.
Students will work in teams and will present their model and explain the
general operation and physics principles. This project is interdisciplinary
in nature.
THE NORTH CAPE OIL SPILL
Grades 6 -8
Project Overview:
Students will study data concerning the North Cape oil spill in Rhode Island and compare information with the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska.
Plate Tectonics
Project Overview: This project takes students to a variety of Internet sites that explore plate tectonics, volcanism, earthquakes and other major physical processes that shape our earth's surface.
