The M.I. Smart !  Program
 

Since 1994, The Chariho Regional School District has supported a program whose purpose is to nurture the innate talents and abilities of all children. The basis of our present Gifted and Talented Program is on Teaching and Learning through the Multiple Intelligences. For the sake of all involved, it became known as the M.I. Smart ! Program, with "M.I." representing the Multiple Intelligences, and "Smart" being an easy way for children to understand that they are all smart in many different ways.
   

Multiple Intelligences is a theory widely accepted by
Educational Psychologists throughout the world. It is based on the premise that we all possess at least eight different intelligences through which we are able to learn/teach new information. Although we each have all eight, no two individuals have them in the same exact amounts, similar to our fingerprints.

Therefore, with regard to teaching children, we must focus our teaching styles so they may better meet the needs of all of our students. The purpose of the teachers in the M.I. Smart ! Program is to identify and strengthen the talents and learning modalities of all children. The M.I. teacher along with the daily classroom teachers, co-develop curriculum modifications which allow children to learn concepts through a variety of strategies.

In response, your child may wish to express his/her knowledge of that content in numerous ways (i.e. puppetry, model making, classroom demonstrations, content songs, plays, etc.) Learning through a variety of unique experiences allows children to better understand themselves as lifelong learners, and to see how others acquire knowledge and apply their skills.

The M.I. Smart! Program fosters self-esteem, for the students will obtain a better understanding of their own unique talents and abilities as well as those possessed by their peers.
