WELCOME TO A SMART PROJECT!
The following project is currently under progress by Rhode Island teachers. Although in some activities, the teachers have borrowed and adapted ideas from other teachers and current programs and sources on the Internet, the work is their own. The activities are displayed here in their original form , unedited as they have submitted them. In most cases, these are ongoing projects. The names, school districts, and email addresses of the authors are included. Please feel free to contact the authors with any suggestions, comments, or even participation.Teaching and learning are cooperative efforts.
ANIMAL ADAPTATIONS TO VARIOUS ENVIRONMENTS
OVERVIEW:
The creators of this year long unit are a fourth grade teacher (Sandra Moyer) and the School Library Media Specialist (Seta Ohanian-Chateauneuf) from the Stadium Elementary School in Cranston, Rhode Island. As part of the fourth grade curriculum, the students have always begun the year by studying Animal Adaptations in Science. Then,as they proceeded through the year's Social Studies units on Grasslands, Polar Lands, Deserts and Rain Forests, one of the many things that they have learned about each area is how the animals are adapted to their environment. This year, we would like to add using the computer to the students' repertoire of research skills by including CD-ROMS, e-mail and Internet navigation.
As the students progress during the year, they will be required to be more independent and to be more sophisticated in their computer research skills. Thus, the earliest unit (Grasslands) has only a few bookmarks and the activities for information retrieval are quite simple since the teacher will demonstrate accessing the pertinent locations on the Internet. The units on the Polar Lands and the Deserts will gradually afford the students more opportunities for locating and accessing information in small groups. The last unit (Rain Forests) requires each student to independently find information through e-mail, on CD-Rom disks, and on various locations on the Internet and write a report on a specific animal's adaptations. In the final assessment, every student will be asked to demonstrate proficiency in using the Internet to access information and report on how three animals of their choice adapt to their environments.
The bookmarks that are listed under each environmental area have been carefully selected and previewed so that they are appropriate for specific activities and for a particular level of research skills using the computer. Those bookmarks at the end of the list under Additional Resources are more general in nature and may be used for the students' further research, particularly for children with advanced computer skills.
Because we feel that computers in school should provide students the opportunity to learn how to use a computer as well as to learn all their other subject matter better by using a computer, we have two main objectives:
- Content Objective:
The students will apply the knowledge that they learned in their science unit on Animal Adaptations to all of the units on different environments (Grasslands, Polar Lands, Deserts and Rain Forests) that they will study in Social Studies during the year.
- Skill Objective:
The students will learn to use the computer for research by practicing telecommunication skills (e-mail, internet navigation) and CD-ROM ROM usage.
Sample Activities
- Grasslands:
- The students will research how the Indians used the different parts of the buffalo by studying the assigned location on the Internet and contributing information to a class list.
- Using the address for Nebraska animals, each student will work with a partner to answer a question on an index card concerning an animal. The cards from the whole class will then be assembled and displayed as a chart.
- The students will trade e-mail messages about native animals with students who live in the American grasslands.
- Internet Sites:
- The Buffalo Contains list of how each part of the buffalo was use. Also a chart on how their numbers dwindled.
- Nebraska Wildlife Descriptions Contains a menu of grassland animals that students can access for facts
- Polar Lands:
- The students will access a specific location on the Internet when given an address and write a caption for the polar bear picture they find there.
- The students will work together to research facts about the polar bear's adaptations using the designated addresses on the bookmark list.
- The students will observe online pictures of polar bears to find adaptations that help the animal survive in his environment.
- Internet Sites:
- Polar BearsBeginning of an index on polar bears
- POLAR BEARS Gives outline of polar bear's adaptations for aquatic environment
- Rick the Polar BearThis is a home page which has a picture and animation on polar bears but also refers you to other resources not useful.
- ONU - Polar Bears Galore!
Contains several photos of polar bears for which you can write questions to sharpen kids' observation skills
- Polar Bear photo -JPEG image 555x277 pixels Picture of a polar bear on his back which can be used as a story starter.
- Deserts:
- The students, working in pairs, will use the CD-ROM encyclopedia and the Internet to find specific information about assigned desert animals.
- After navigating through some World Wide Web home pages, students will devise their own non-electronic home page by making a bulletin board where locations unfold to give information on various animals of the desert.
- Internet Sites:
- Animal Bytes: Dromedary CamelHas good picture of a camel as well as a list of facts. There is some info on how it is adapted.
- Netscape: CoyotesThis has very orderly approach to info; also has sound if you have the right software.
- Desert Shrew Database (Notiosorex crawfordi)
Contains photos, information and bibliography on the shrew.
- Water Conservation by Desert Plants & Animals cecsci.110
Teacher lesson plan for grades 4-12.
- Rain Forests:
- Each student will research an assigned animal using print sources, e-mail, the CD-ROM encyclopedia and the Internet.
- He/She will use this information to write a report which describes the animal and tells how its adaptations help it to survive in its environment.
- Internet Sites:
- Sloth mother & baby. GIF image 640x480 pixels Color picture of sloth mother and baby.
- Kids' Action: Rainforest Animals
General background info on rainforests on an easy level which includes some animals within the text.
- Rainforest Mammals
Contains photos of rainforest mammals as well as hypertext info.
- Rainforest Birds
Contains beautiful photos of rainforest birds as well as hypertext info.
- Rainforest Amphibians
Contains photos of rainforest amphibians as well as hypertext info.
- Levels of the Rainforest Activity
Activity where class makes a mural of the different levels of the rainforest
- Vanishing Rainforests
This is a fourth grade project on rainforests that contains info on lists of animals by level of the rainforest.
- Unit Assessment:
- The student will be given the address for a hypertext linked list of animals.
- Working on his/her own, each student will access three animals of their choice and then write an essay telling what the animals' adaptations are and how they help these animals to survive in particular environments.
- Each student's progress on computer usage will be observed by the teacher and library media specialist and evaluated.
- Each student's report on a rain forest animal will be graded.
- Internet Sites:
- Animals Hotlist
Hotlist has fast facts (class, order family, size, weight, description, life span, diet, etc.) and fun facts. Can be used by students to find info about animals for final assessment.
