The following project is currently under progress by Rhode Island teachers. Although in some activities, the teachers have borrowed and adapted ideas from other teachers and current programs and sources on the Internet, the work is their own. The activities are displayed here in their original form , unedited as they have submitted them. In most cases, these are ongoing projects. The names, school districts, and email addresses of the authors are included. Please feel free to contact the authors with any suggestions, comments, or even participation.Teaching and learning are cooperative efforts.
The purpose of this SMART project is to create a list of resources, which can be used to enhance and broaden a fifth grade math and science curriculum. This project will use the technology provided by the RIDE training. The overall project will provide internet links or personalized bookmarks that will tie into the math and science curriculum using telecommunications. The children will be able to search around the world via internet which will give them experiences above and beyond anything the traditional classroom teacher could provide. The children at Veazie Street School will have access to the Internet in their classroom and the computer lab.
The students will be learning about and ultimately using the Internet and e-mail in preparation for an interactive field trip to the Jason Project at the Oceanographic Institute at the University of Rhode Island. The Jason Project site for 1996 will be in Florida, where studies will be conducted to explore the peninsula, coral reef and marine life.
This project will provide the teacher with an extensive plan to supplement the Jason Project tour with background resources in math, science, and technology available through the Internet. To prepare our students to meet the technological demands of the 21st Century, this project will stimulate students to use critical thinking skills, while becoming skillful in technology.
