WELCOME TO A SMART PROJECT!
The following project is currently under progress by Rhode Island teachers. Although in some activities, the teachers have borrowed and adapted ideas from other teachers and current programs and sources on the Internet, the work is their own. The activities are displayed here in their original form , unedited as they have submitted them. In most cases, these are ongoing projects. The names, school districts, and email addresses of the authors are included. Please feel free to contact the authors with any suggestions, comments, or even participation.Teaching and learning are cooperative efforts.
WILDLIFE, WOLVES, ENDANGERED SPECIES
PROJECT OVERVIEW:
Veazie Street School is an Apple Lighthouse School. Each classroom is equipped with Macintosh computers and there is a computer lab. All of the computers in the building are networked. Children and teachers at every grade level will have the opportunity to use the Internet to access resources and information from around the world.
The purpose of this SMART project is to provide Internet locations that are available to teachers for further exploration of themes included in The Providence School Department Literacy Curriculum Guides. Reading, writing, listening, speaking, science, math and social studies are integrated in thematic units within the curriculum.
Bookmarks identifying Internet sites have been collected on wildlife/conservation, aquatic wildlife, wolves and endangered species. Specific lesson plans and curriculum projects are included. These sites can be used to explore science and math in these areas via telecommunications.
Children will become familiar with wildlife, wolves and endangered species through photos and graphics. Conservation and environmental education is explored through national organizations such as the National Fish and Wildlife Society, Environmental Education and EcoNet. The studies of the balance of nature, animal habitats, survival, socialization, communication, and the interdependence of man, animals and plants will be enhanced by the world wide resources on the Internet.
Mathematics will be infused in all areas of study.
- Addition, subtraction and multiplication of species and groups
- measurement of animals, areas of habitat
- compare and contrast the number of animals in geographical areas, size of animals, habits and habitats.
