WELCOME TO A SMART PROJECT!

The following project is currently under progress by Rhode Island teachers. Although in some activities, the teachers have borrowed and adapted ideas from other teachers and current programs and sources on the Internet, the work is their own. The activities are displayed here in their original form , unedited as they have submitted them. In most cases, these are ongoing projects. The names, school districts, and email addresses of the authors are included. Please feel free to contact the authors with any suggestions, comments, or even participation.Teaching and learning are cooperative efforts.

BLACKSTONE RIVER PROJECT

Project Overview:

The Blackstone River is an important natural resource of the city of Woonsocket. It played a major role in the development of the textile industry there during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Unfortunately, many years of pollution have taken its toll on this great river. Efforts over the past twenty years have focused on the revitalization of the Blackstone. Community wide programs to promote and protect the Blackstone are now in place. Students can be involved as active participants to restore the river.

This project is designed to provide information to students about river ecology and the effects of industrialization. It is hoped that students will gain insight into similar river ecology projects across the country and apply them to their Blackstone River studies. Students' activities include water quality testing and monitoring, river ecology simulation through a classroom river tank, and data collection and exchange via e-mail.

This project provides a comprehensive list of bookmarks for initial project design. (Most are teacher resources.)
