SCITUATE HIGH SCHOOL'S FAVORITE MATH AND SCIENCE SITES ON THE INTERNET.
The bookmarks found here are the result of surfing the Net. 'Surfing' is a time consuming process even when you have a specific task to complete. The bookmarks related to middle/secondary mathematics and science are a small beginning of resources of interesting mathematical and scientific topics that were found. They can initiate Internet investigations by mathematics and science teachers for enhancement of their curricula. Investigations on the Internet can open a vast information database that can only open new learning experiences for students and teachers.
MATH PROBLEM SOLVING
The purpose of this project is to bring math problem solving background for teachers, lesson plans for teachers to try, and activities for students to actively engage in themselves. Math lessons include step by step lessons the teacher can use to prepare the students to work cooperatively at problem solving. Activities for students contain Math Magic, an online problem solving project. Also included here are other areas for students to actively engage in and explore. All information was compiled using the world wide web browser, Netscape.
AN INTERACTIVE TOUR OF THE BOSTON COMPUTER MUSEUM
This project will provide internet links and personalized bookmarks that will tie into the math and science curriculum using telecommunications. This project will provide the children hands-on training in the Boston Computer Museum to develop an understanding of how the internet works through the exhibit The Networked Planet.
This detailed project will provide the teacher with an extensive plan to supplement the Computer Museum tour with background resources in math, science, and technology available through the Internet.
ANIMAL ADAPTATIONS TO VARIOUS ENVIRONMENTS
Students will study the effects of different environments on animal adaptation. (Grasslands, Polar Lands, Deserts, and Rain Forests) Students will research information through e-mail, internet navigation using bookmarks and CD ROM usage. Students will then report on how three animals of their choice adapt to their environments.
WILDLIFE, WOLVES, ENDANGERED SPECIES
The purpose of this SMART project to provide Internet locations that are available to teachers for further exploration of themes included in The Providence School Department Literacy Curriculum Guides.
Bookmarks identifying Internet sites have been collected on wildlife/conservation, aquatic wildlife, wolves and endangered species. Specific lesson plans and curriculum projects are included. These sites can be used to explore science and math in these areas via telecommunications.
THE RAINFOREST
This collection of bookmarks of Internet Sites was complied to enhance a rainforest project. The potential exists in a variety of sites to build a collection of activities to use in the classroom.
BLACKSTONE RIVER PROJECT
This project is designed to provide information to students about river ecology and the effects of industrialization. It is hoped that students will gain insight into similar river ecology projects across the country and apply them to their Blackstone River studies. Students' activities include water quality testing and monitoring, river ecology simulation through a classroom river tank, and data collection and exchange via e-mail. This project includes a comprehensive list of bookmarks for initial project design.
This project will provide internet links and personalized bookmarks that will tie into the science curriculum using telecommunications. The students will be learning about and ultimately using the Internet and e-mail in preparation for an interactive field trip to the Jason Project at the Oceanographic Institute at the University of Rhode Island. The Jason Project site for 1996 will be in Florida, where studies will be conducted on the peninsula, coral reef and marine life.
This project will provide the teacher with an extensive plan to supplement the Jason Project tour with background resources in math, science, and technology available through he Internet. To prepare our students to meet the technological demands of the 21st Century, this project will stimulate students to use critical thinking skills, while becoming skillful in technology.
SOME FAVORITE K-6 WEATHER SITES
The purpose of this site is to enable students to explore a multitude of information involving many aspects of weather. Math, science, reading, writing, and social studies can be integrated with the topic of weather. The following list of favorite weather sites bring real world, up-to-date meteorological data into the classroom via the Internet.
Mt Pleasant High School's
Science and Technolgy Project 1995-1996
The first part of this unit will be an introduction to the internet - surfing the net on a treasure hunt. Then, each group of students must choose an invention to research on the Internet and to prepare a research report. The will use the information that they obtained during this project to write an "infomercial" for a future invention of their own.
Misc.
Wickford Elementary Studies Australia
An elementary school in Wickford, Rhode Island takes an on-line tour of the "land down under".
EXPLORING THE DESERT ON THE INTERNET
The Internet sites found here are recommended as places to gather more data about deserts in the United States.
LEE and MARIANN'S FAVORITE CURRENT EVENTS BOOKMARKS
A great collection of fun and interesting sites for children and teachers.
AN INTERNET MATH/SCIENCE CAREER AWARENESS PROJECT
A set of activities has been developed to foster greater math/science career awareness in students. These activities can be used by teachers at almost any level from grades 7-12. The Internet and e-mail are vital parts of most of the activities, but some do not require a computer. Students will research on the Internet career choices and engage in e-mail correspondence with a "mentor" in the career or profession of their choice.
PASSPORT TO THE WORLD
This project is one phase of a larger school plan for an International Fair. At this site, students and teachers will find a list of interesting web sites to begin a comprehensive on-line world tour.
COUNT ON US: CONCEPTS AND APPLICATIONS OF DEMOGRAPHY
Students will use the WWW to find U.S. and world demographic data. In this project, the students will apply demographic concepts to a marketing problem. As a final project outcome, they will prepare and deliver a slide presentation which demonstrates their solution to the problem.
PETS ARE PEOPLE, TOO!
Using the Internet, first and second graders can have fun and learn about the crucial role that pets play in community and family life. Students will learn about pet care, make posters for community pet stores, adopt a pet on-line, and put on a Pet Fair.
TRAVEL THE WORLD VIA THE "NET"
With this SMART project, students will design and write a travel brochure of a foreign country.
Basic facts about the country will be gathered from various suggested Internet sources.
By using e-mail our students will be able to write and send electronic postcards to students in other countries.
