Students often state that they want to pursue a particular career(such as doctor) without realizing the steps required to achieve their goal.
General Procedure:
- A master table of hourly, daily , weekly, monthly, and yearly salaries is provided for use by the teacher. The teacher could demonstrate using one hourly rate, how the daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly salaries are calculated.
- Students could then be assigned an hourly rate at random and they could calculate the other rates. Questions that they could answer are suggested below. Discussion could also be done in groups, so that they could ask opinions of others about some of the questions.
- A yearly salary should also be given to the student so that they could work the calculations "backwards".
- A class discussion of the salaries and their relationship to education, type of career, geographic location, etc., should conclude this activity. A similar discussion should be held at the end of all activities to assess if the students have better career awareness.
