WELCOME TO A SMART PROJECT!

The following project is currently under progress by Rhode Island teachers. Although in some activities, the teachers have borrowed and adapted ideas from other teachers and current programs and sources on the Internet, the work is their own. The activities are displayed here in their original form , unedited as they have submitted them. In most cases, these are ongoing projects. The names, school districts, and email addresses of the authors are included. Please feel free to contact the authors with any suggestions, comments, or even participation.Teaching and learning are cooperative efforts.

TRAVEL THE WORLD VIA THE "NET"

Project Overview:

Nathan Bishop is a middle school on the East Side of Providence, Rhode Island. Minorities make up approximately 75% of the school population. Many of the students are enrolled in the ESL Program or are ESL graduates. Some of their native countries are Puerto Rico, The Dominican Republic, Mexico, Bolivia, Portugal, Russia, Cambodia, and Libya. Students are placed on academic teams with four teachers: one each for English, Science, Social Studies, and Math. Nathan Bishop is a Carnegie School. One of the objectives of a Carnegie School is to involve the students in interdisciplinary projects. With our SMART project, students will be exposed to work in the four content areas while having fun. Students will be divided into groups. Each group's responsibility will be to design and write a travel brochure of a foreign country.

The brochure will include:

  1. Basic facts about the country which students will gather from various Internet sources.
  2. Places to visit, stay, and dine recommended by students in the subject countries. By using e-mail our students will be able to "converse" with these students.
  3. A weather chart of monthly changes in temperature and precipitation. An Internet weather source will provide data so students can make a table or graph of the data.
  4. Recommended travel itineraries including airline flights with distances calculated in both metric and U.S. standards.
  5. U.S. State Department and foreign government information about travelling advisories and visas within the country.
  6. Graphics showing maps, interesting locations, etc.
  7. Journal writings describing what each group did while using the Internet.

This project is to be a year-long venture. Upon completion, we will have a "Tourism Fair" open to other students, parents, and friends. Students will be able to exhibit their findings and maybe include food dishes prepared from recipes from the students with whom they corresponded via e-mail.
