The following project is currently under progress by Rhode Island teachers. Although in some activities, the teachers have borrowed and adapted ideas from other teachers and current programs and sources on the Internet, the work is their own. The activities are displayed here in their original form , unedited as they have submitted them. In most cases, these are ongoing projects. The names, school districts, and email addresses of the authors are included. Please feel free to contact the authors with any suggestions, comments, or even participation.Teaching and learning are cooperative efforts.
"HURRICANES ON TRACK"
This fifth grade project comes in the later part of a weather unit lasting one quarter. The students have learned the basic components of weather and the uses of various weather instruments.
The students will be introduced to the hurricane unit, and will be given activity sheets. They will work in cooperative groups of three or four. Each group will have an opportunity to log on to Netscape, and, using a home page, will access the data needed to complete their activity sheets.
The students will also work together to develop a questionnaire to determine weather in different parts of the United States, and how the weather in other areas determines the weather where they live. This questionnaire will be E-mailed to other students, and their replies will be logged on to maps, by the students. This information, along with other data accessed by computer will enable them to track weather systems, especially tropical storms.
This topic and exposure to computer technology will be integrated into the various other aspects of the fifth grade curriculum in the following ways:
Good day!
Your mission for today is to become meteorological wizards. You will accomplish this feat by working with your group to complete the HURRICANE SCAVENGER HUNT. It is very important that you follow all the directions that are given, and answer as many questions as you can. Only work with the people in your group. After being assigned your group role (leader, reader, recorder, encourager, etc.) you will be ready to begin. Since we will be using the Internet Computer Network, only one group will be able to be on at a time.
Good Luck!
