WELCOME TO A SMART PROJECT!

The following project is currently under progress by Rhode Island teachers. Although in some activities, the teachers have borrowed and adapted ideas from other teachers and current programs and sources on the Internet, the work is their own. The activities are displayed here in their original form , unedited as they have submitted them. In most cases, these are ongoing projects. The names, school districts, and email addresses of the authors are included. Please feel free to contact the authors with any suggestions, comments, or even participation.Teaching and learning are cooperative efforts.

"PLANTS: A TEACHER RESOURCE GUIDE FOR GRADES 3, 4, 5"

General Introduction

This knowledge will be generated through the use of up and coming technology.

Grade Level Objectives

Grade 3

  1. All children should be able to tell how plants are good for the environment by explaining what they do for the air and the soil.
  2. The children should be able to watch plants grow and measure them metrically and in inches and chart their growth.
  3. The children will be able to identify the basic parts of a plant by drawing them in a flip type book and labeling the parts.
  4. The children will be able to understand what photosynthesis is and explain after doing experiments with plant growth in dark and light. They will be able to compare color and draw some conclusions form that.
  5. The children will be able to classify plants into certain categories after studying the different types of plants possibly by making a chart of characteristics in each grouping.

Grade 4

When we finish the first theme of the third unit of the HB treasury series the students should be able to:

  1. Know the various aspects that plants have on the environment, review parts of a plant, measure growth of a plant, know what photosynthesis is, and learn about various types of plants.
  2. Compare and contrast growth of plants raise from seed to that of plants grown from pieces of plants(clippings).
  3. Find out about real life record breaking plant ie...tallest tree, longest vine, biggest/smallest plant, oldest plant.
  4. Contribute to a classroom field guide.
  5. Know what carnivorous means and be able to list at least 3 different carnivorous plants.
  6. Locate the various areas around the world that carnivorous plants grow

Grade 5

  1. After participating in lessons from this site, students will be able to name at least three examples of environmental aspects that affect plants and plant growth. (Air quality, light, soil, water, temperature, etc.)
  2. Students will plant seeds and incorporate math activities by creating a graph that will require them to make predictions, measure, compare and record plant growth.
  3. Students will explain why and how air quality affects plants and plant growth.
  4. Students will compare and contrast plants whose growth rates are affected by natural and artificial light sources.
  5. Students will make predictions, observe and describe (in written and art form) the effect of light on plants.
  6. Students will compare and contrast plants whose growth rates are affected by exposure to light and light deprivation.
  7. Students will describe the positive and negative effect of water on plants and plant growth.
  8. Students will describe various uses for plants. (Food, medicine)
  9. Students will be able to identify and describe the main parts of a plant. (Roots, stem, leaves, etc.)
  10. Students will be able to identify seed parts.
  11. Students will compare and contrast the parts of a variety of plants.
  12. Students will identify different types of plants.

Library

  1. Students will be able to identify questions to be answered regarding their topic area.
  2. Students will be able to identify types of resources to answer questions they have developed regarding their topic area.
  3. Students will be able to locate resources.
  4. Students will be able to locate information using the resources and answering the questions.
