Children
will be able to explain that there are 3 types of turtles and where each
type lives. They will be able to describe a turtle's body and tell
some things that turtles eat. They will be able to use new vocabulary in
their
writings
during the unit.

Explain
to the children that they will be seeing a slide show to teach them about
real turtles. They will learn where they live, what kinds there are, what
they eat and how to take care of a pet turtle. While watching the show
they should be thinking of what kind of turtles they find interesting.
Children
will watch the Power Point Presentation allowing time for questions on
each slide.

Following the presentation, review the vocabulary words with the class.
Discuss what turtles they liked and would like to learn more about. They
will choose a turtle to make out of the paper plate.
They will color the paper plate like the shell of the turtle. Then they
can make the head, feet or flippers, and tail out of the colored paper.
They attach these with the paper fasteners.

Children
will display their turtles on a bulletin board divided into 3 sections:
freshwater turtles, land turtles and sea turtles.
The children will select a turtle to
research. They will read find that turtle in a non-fiction book and write
3-5 new facts about it on story paper.
They can draw the turtle on top.

will assess through observation, work samples and class discussion.
