Kids and Kites in the classroom

Do you remember the last time that you flew a kite? Do you remember the feeling that you had as it  rose into the sky ? Well,  now you can bring that feeling into the classroom.  Kites can become a part of your curriculum, whether you teach math, science, history, or English.

You will find a lot of interesting links to various kite sites and also some activities. Since I teach middle school age kids I have geared most of the activities for that age level.

There are many different things that you will be able to do when you complete this unit.

Kite Plans

There are many different places where you can locate plans to make kites. One of the easiest kites to make is a sled kite, you can go get the pattern and directions and start to build a kite. Some other links that have good plans are:

Mike's Kite Site   Kites, Kids and Education do mix
Kites and Kite Flying    The Kid Kite Web Page

Kite Research
Now for the tough stuff. There are some questions that I would like you to answer. Go to questions, print out the page and look for the answers.  You will find the answers both on the internet and possibly in books from your local library. Some of the places that I visited to make up these questions include the links above and :

Fly Me to The Moon
 CyberFighter  Website
LES-Kite Safety Fun Book (This is good for the younger crowd)

Mini-Lessons

These are a group of short readings with some questions attached to them that also need to be completed.

Aerodynamics of Flight
Teaching your Kite to Fly
There's Something in the Wind
The Sum of the Parts Equals the Whole.

Math Lesson

This is the part where I would like you to build an astrolabe and follow the activity on that page.
