Directions for Making a Sled Kite

You need these materials:

  • Sail material -- paper or plastic
  • Pattern material -- paper
  • 3/16" or 1/8" dowel -- two dowels per kite
  • tape
  • string

Follow these directions carefully

  • Make your pattern.  Decide what size you want your kite to be.  Measure the lengths of the sides of the kite on your pattern. Enlarge the size of the pattern by multiplying each length by the same number. Draw your full-sized pattern on paper.
  • Make the sail. Use your pattern to trace the sail on paper or plastic, and then cut it out, including the vent.
  • Attach the dowels. Cut two pieces of 1/8” dowel the length of the spar. If your sail is taller than 30", use 3/16" dowels and add a third dowel parallel to the spars down the middle. Tape the dowels to the kite at the tape marks. Make sure the tape goes over the ends of the dowels to the back of the kite.
  • Decorate your kite
  • Make the bridle. Cut a bridle of kite string four times the distance from one dowel to the other. Reinforce the kite material with strapping tape at the points of the keels, marked on the pattern with triangles. Attach the bridle to the keels at these points. Tie an overhand loop in the middle of the bridle to attach flying string.
  • Add the streamers. Cut two tails for stability; each tail should be three times the length of the diagonal of the kite's body. Tape tails to the base of the dowels.
  • Attach string to the bridle loop. It's ready to fly!
